5 Days Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater

Welcome to the start of your safari and welcome to Tanzania! You've chosen a fantastic place for your safari journey and we'll get you started with an introductory briefing before we head out to begin the trip you've been dreaming of. Everything seems to be cast on a grander scale in Tarangire National Park, from the giant baobab trees that bring such personality to the park's landscapes to the massive elephants for which the park is famous. Although a popular place to visit for travelers on safari through northern Tanzania, Tarangire rarely feels crowded, and that becomes even more true the further south you go in the park. Other wildlife to look forward to here includes big cats, zebra, hippo, buffalo, wildebeest and more. If you're really lucky, you might spy the park's transient population of African wild dog. Arusha It’s a world away from wildlife and wild lands, but Arusha is an essential part of the northern Tanzanian safari, with plenty of scenes of local life to enjoy.

You won’t find many better national parks in Africa than the Serengeti, which has few rivals when it comes to both the numbers and variety of animals. Track down the annual migration of wildebeest and zebra. Enjoy the vast horizons that are perfect for spotting predators (especially lions, leopards, cheetahs and spotted hyenas) and their prey (buffaloes, impalas and kongoni), as well as elephants and giraffes. If you’re really lucky you’ll see a hunt, one of the most exhilarating sights anywhere in the wild. And at every turn, revel in its beauty, with flat-topped acacia trees silhouetted against the setting sun, and so many other classic African safari images.

Evening Game Drive, Serengeti National Park

Going on an evening game drive is one of the highlights of any safari. This is when temperatures cool, the light becomes softer and the wildlife begins to get active. You'll be out when the light is best for photos, and it's also one of the best times of day to see the animals.

There's always more to discover in the Serengeti, and you'll get more chances to do so on your return to the park.

Early Morning Game Drive, Serengeti National Park

Put on some warm clothes and enjoy an early morning game drive. This is the perfect time to experience the wildlife and the landscapes they inhabit. The light is soft and warm – perfect for photography – and most animals are out and about, and active. If you’re not an early riser, you’ll definitely want to make an exception here.

You’ll get to know the Serengeti and its colourful cast of characters even better with another day immersed in its wild beauty.

Ngorongoro Highlands

Enjoy cool temperatures, forest wildlife (including elephants, buffaloes and leopards), and fine views of craters and mountains when you visit the Ngorongoro Highlands.

Your first sight of Ngorongoro Crater is likely not one you’ll easily forget. As seen from the crater rim, this natural bowl, both vast and intimate, is one of Africa’s most beautiful natural features, stretching 19 green kilometres (12 miles) from one side to the other. Down in the crater itself, you’ll explore an astonishingly rich, self-contained ecosystem that is protected by high crater walls. Here, lions and hyenas hunt wildebeest and Grant’s gazelle within sight of elephants and black rhinos. Your day spent here will reveal a surprising variety of habitats, from the Lereal Forest and salty Lake Magadi to the plains that rise and fall gently all across the valley floor.
